I never thought I would live to see the day day in America where we would elect someone who can now control national and state media. Corporations are buying newspapers, and also buying up news stations, it just fills me with disgust and with dread. It reminds me of the “Hunger Games”, where everything was owned and run by the state and national fascist regime. I didn’t realize, that also within the SubStack community there are people who are trumpster/maga types who write really horrible things about Kamala Harris and Joe Biden. And they write horrible things about the rest of us who clearly have ideas as to what a well run democracy looks like. It’s interesting, because you can tell immediately that they are maga types, because they display a complete lack of critical thinking, just lobbing their bs out in to comments. My question is, are those writers and journalist and commentators who write for Public Notice all democratically minded or, are there also maga types here? I have no TV so I am spared any type of news coverage by main stream media. I do follow BBC, NPR, PBS and Al Jazeera on my social media sites and of course I do follow several of the Public Notice writers. But I just never thought that at 74 years old that I would see media outlets like ABC or like CBS fold like cheap suits and bow down to this incoming dictator type regime. And when I saw the pictures of trump, smirking and smiling at the New York Stock Exchange opening bell, it just reminded me of seeing someone like Henry VIII, who surrounded himself with butt kissing sycophants, who said the most ridiculous things to keep him happy. I do not recognize my country.
Maggie, I think you're safe from MAGA influence here at Public Notice. Aaron is a reliable pro-democracy journalist who would never let anything untoward sneak into his publication. I'm happy to know there are some people who will always do the right thing, though it is hard to trust when media outlets we thought were reliable fold like cheap suits. There are increments of disagreement within the anti-Trump world, but for the most part, I've found the places and people I respect are staying true to the cause.
Trump is famous for his bonehead moves … but his bet against ABC and its potentially unveiling much under deposition, was a sure one. I guess being a bully means you can scent out other cowards.
Thanks for another great (if dispiriting) piece. One small quibble: you write that LA Times owner Patrick Soon-Shiong has been "killing stories" in the paper. As a longtime LAT subscriber, I'm certainly as furious with Soon-Shiong as anyone, but to me this wording suggested that he was sticking his nose into the newsroom, whereas -- as your link confirmed -- he's limited his damage (so far) to the op-ed pages.
I don't point this out in order to suggest "Oh, well, that's fine then" -- obviously it's an outrage. But if Soon-Shiong begins spiking news stories, I propose that that would represent a major escalation in his capitulation to fascism, and would deserve a calling-out of its own. To me, it's worth keeping a clear distinction between these provocations, even if strictly for pathological purposes.
(So far I haven't cancelled my LAT subscription. But I do feel torn between the impulse to make a statement and withhold financial support from appeasers, and the desire to stay informed on local news (at which the LAT still excels) and to continue supporting local journalism and its hardworking practitioners in general.)
And what’s the deal with Gorsuch? He joins the ever reliable Clarence Thomas in wanting to overturn Sullivan … clearly he wants Trump to name him Chief Justice and Leonard Leo to arrange for fishing trips and wonderful gifts.

Thanks.
Technically, I don't think you can surrender to you own side.
They're all fascists in my book. Literally, you have a choice, you can just say "no". That's it. Say no to fascism.

How long before they eat each other?
I can't wait to watch that show.
We screwed. It's the oligarchs, not just Trump. They fear no pitchforks. Short termism run wild.

There's an unhappy rabbit family mourning the splitting of hares
ABC's tugging of the forelock is a premature genuflection?
