These Republicans are awful. I'm curious as to what they think the end result will be. Does Abbott and the rest of his compatriots think they will ultimately get their way? What will they do if the federal government cuts off any support to Texas and any other state who decides to take things into their own hands? Don't they depend on government monies? What does the big picture look like? I feel the Republicans are going to go through some shit of their own making. At least, that's what I hoping.

Agree. Any state that sends troops to the border loses Federal funding. Most of those states rely pretty heavily on support, if I'm not mistaken, and whose tax dollars pay for that support? The "Blue" states, the ones who are supporting the Federal government and the Constitution.

Agreed. I’m pretty sure there are numerous military bases in Texas. Military personnel live in Texas. What if they all just disappeared to another state?

There seems to be a lot of things the federal government can do to push back on these MAGA Monsters. I've no idea if it's even constitutionally viable to do anything, but I do like the thought of "Fine. You do you. No help from us (Fed. Gov). Have at it and see what happens." Losers.

That is what I would like to see happen. I have been advocating it for a while. Biden has won so far on the various fronts that the Republicans have tried to stand on. In the meantime, their numbers diminish, and not getting things done is wearing on more and more of them, just like it is on us. The 3 US soldiers killed in Syria can be tied to tying up funding to support the situation in both the Middle East, and Ukraine. It is a gamble for Republicans that they may destroy their own careers as they support Trumps. And, he is deteriorating before our eyes. A just retribution would be to add increasing stress to Trump. The people who are owed money by Trump should file a class action civil lawsuit to get back monies owed.

I agree trump is deteriorating. I'm skeptical he will make it to November. He may have a mental collapse. His MAGA Monsters must all be drooling idiots. I don't know how else they believe the lies that trump spews every time he speaks.

Excellent piece.

Couple this with Trump torpedoing an immigration deal for his benefit, which belies Abbott’s claims.

Is this a latter day Fort Sumpter?

Time will tell; what will Biden do? Time will tell.

I vote for executing Greg Abbott for Treason—no trial, no appeal, just wheel him out in front of a firing squad and let him have it.

Let's see how "heroic" those other Republican Governors are THEN!

This is really depressing. I hope there are strategists in Biden's Administration who can find a solution. Abbott is a horror, and to see him succeeding in his gambit is appalling.

Start slow, there are so many blue states supporting red states because of the way the federal funding formulas work. If they want out, start with taking away all their federal entitlements.

Ima 6th generation Texan and this is my first amendment right to say: wheel Abbott to that boat ramp in Eagle Pass. Make sure he’s right up at the top of the slope, right in front of the razor wire, and lined up straight. Make him watch for awhile, as we make jokes about him “standing up” for Texas. When we get bored, just let go.

For once, we don’t even need guns.

Anyone thinks this is mean, try practicing OBGyn in Texas today. You bet I’m mean.

Check your timeline. It has not been a few months or years. This started at the end of the Civil War and has continued for the last 150 plus years. Our failure to stop this attack on the United States through appeasement has brought us to this exact point. It's time to do what every pre-school educator knows. Give the little people exactly what they want and watch them destroy themselves. They have no future, it will be an absolute self-inflicted unmitigated diaster.

please do more stories on how inhumane the GOP treatment of migrants is, how many children have been slashed and drowned, kidnapped and dropped in a freezing weather without adequate clothing because of GOP pantomiming of giving a shit about "border security" Im so sick of legacy media using euphemistic language like "Abbott stepping up border security" when it should say Abbott "killing and maiming more innocent civilians to score political points with racists."

Abbott is using the power of the governor's office to run for president.

If States have this kind of power over the federal government, then we could have entire sanctuary states.

Biden does have a good option. Stop pussyfooting around and send in the COE to tear the buoys and the razor wire out, today. If Abbott orders the National Guard to resist, nationalize the Guard and send them home. Right now he looks impotent and feckless. Act boldly and unapologetically and he demonstrates resolve and compassion. Voters respect resolve, they abhor cowardice.

Trump is out in the open telling his cult not to make a deal for the border. And they listen to him. Hopefully not this time ! He’s like the Pied Pieper they all follow his coattails!

The New Colossus (The poem at the base of the Statue of Liberty, it moves me to tears.)

Not like the brazen giant of Greek fame,

With conquering limbs astride from land to land;

Here at our sea-washed, sunset gates shall stand

A mighty woman with a torch, whose flame

Is the imprisoned lightning, and her name

Mother of Exiles. From her beacon-hand

Glows world-wide welcome; her mild eyes command

The air-bridged harbor that twin cities frame.

"Keep, ancient lands, your storied pomp!" cries she

With silent lips. "Give me your tired, your poor,

Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,

The wretched refuse of your teeming shore.

Send these, the homeless, tempest-tost to me,

I lift my lamp beside the golden door!"

The words above are on the base of the Statue of Liberty. When was the last time any of the republicans, any at all, (or any of us) read this poem? Most, probably never. Shame on this country. America is not great, and for god’s sake, stop saying “god bless America”, it sounds ridiculous, why would god (if there is a god) bless this country any more than any other? I am sickened and saddened by the utter lack of compassion for those seeking asylum, assistance and trying to save their families. A christian nation? Absolutely not. We are not.

I have long come to the sad conclusion that the Republicans/American conservative movement respects the rule of law. The question for historians is was this always the case and they were just conning us.

How is defying federal authority in this matter not illegal, not "inciting insurrection"? Abbott should be arrested and charged.

This is inaccurate. I've been following all the court cases for months, and you conflated multiple cases.

The SCOTUS decision basically allows federal agents to cut the razor wire. It doesn't stop Texas from putting it down.

In addition, the buoy case is a separate case. The district judge issued a preliminary injunction Texas to move the buoys to the shore while the trial continued on its merits. The Fifth agreed with the judge, but Texas moved for an en banc hearing. The Fifth then vacated the preliminary injunction...Texas does not have to move the buoys. When the district judge decided to continue to hear the case on its merits, the Fifth, in an extraordinary event almost unheard of, stopped him.

Texas literally runs to the Fifth for everything now. You wouldn't believe the mess this is.

You do need to issue a correction.
