I think most Americans are clueless about the internal migrations of our country despite our cultural history of Pioneers. As this piece said post Civil War fueled the migrations north and west. Again in post WWII the returning service men went where the jobs were and built their families and communities in areas not in their ancestors backyards. Even in my lifetime working in the high tech industry I have gone where the jobs are and many others still do. So encountering new neighbors shouldn't be such a bone of contention as the party of JDV is making it out to be.
Great exposé of a political fraudster. At the end it says JD's schtick "is, at bottom, powered in no small part by self-loathing and resentment." Maybe, but also with a massive dose of naked opportunism. He is very similar to Louisiana's loathsome Senator John Kennedy. They both went to elite schools (Kennedy was an Oxford scholar). They both revealed publicly that they know their bill of goods is a fraud. JD's comments about Trump are famous; Kennedy ran for Senate twice as a Democrat. Like Vance he had a revelation, and now sees the pickins' are much riper in the GOP. Willie Sutton said he robbed banks because that was where the money is. JD and Foghorn Leghorn Kennedy went to the GOP because that's where the suckers are.
"That deeply negative and strikingly one dimensional account of the people of Appalachia was never accurate. Indeed, Vance’s suggestion that “cultural” defects doomed many Appalachian immigrants and their descendants to failure was demeaning."
I wonder if Vance's life-saving evangelical church explained exactly HOW "“the gay lobby was making it more and more difficult for Christians to live their lives or to practice their faith.” Is the gay lobby forcing Christians to worship Sodom? Closing down their churches? How are their lives harder to live? Though I guess if it is your mission to tell others how they must live, the dreaded lobby does interfere with that mission.
Glad for JD that he feels his life was saved, but his intellect took a real hit that still reverberates today.
I just watched Wild Wild Country and it makes me wonder if that cult’s attempt to “replace” the voting citizen’s in the town with people who foreign born, “elite” or the street people (they would later dump in Portland).. is where all these people’s fear started. A tiny bit of truth now turned into a huge irrational pervading sickness of fear. The documentary IMO made it clear the attorney general and other officials were already unabashedly mixing their Christian church views with state.
God help us. Thanks for this account of Vance. Sounds like he actively prevented help for those he represents to pose.
"Like some of Vance’s other positions, this made some question whether, after years of talking down to the community, Vance actually wanted to see his hometown realize an economic recovery."
To pose as what? When it comes to Vance, is there any there, there? He's no believer except in his own theology. I believe he's able to read the Bible but he's not learned any of its lessons. I wouldn't elect him to anything but I hope his eyes become open to the house of cards he's built.
The best that can be said is that, as an evangelical Christian Catholic convert, Vance believes in the Hell he seems destined for

Kuddos for identifying “news junkies” as addicts.
Our task is twofold: to become informed with-out mainlining hate and vitriol.
And to decry it without adding to it.
Best methods: personal 1-1 well informed conversations on foundational issues- who are we? Us this who we are.
Saying no to havoc and yes to peace is an easy sell. And if it’s not? I encourage the other person to look at their addiction for their sake.

And now we see him in full form.

I remember the backlash — especially, for me, on C-SPAN — when his book first came out. Thanks for this!
Are we sure Vance isn't Jerry Springer's illegitimate love child?
J.D. Vance is a hypocritical jackass. And that is probably defaming jackasses.

They have nothing else to botch about….
Vance's hypocrisy is breathtaking. It also reminds me of abused children who grow up to abuse their own kids.
