Thank you for this in depth comparison between an ethical president (and compassionate human being) and a corrupt soon to be leader (I will never say that he is my president!)- I have always had the utmost respect for Jimmy Carter, for his integrity, for his leadership, for he truly walked the talk throughout his life. In a world of Trump may more Carters come to light!

Your message today was excellent. The only thing missing is the right "audience." Those who voted for Trump don't grasp Trump's utter and complete corruption, his dangerous ties to Russia - a dictator who wishes to destroy our democracy and has openly stated this, and his self-serving and naraccistic approach to everything in life. Someone needs to come up with the right equation to sway the minds of Trumpers. I have not seen it yet. In fact, those who voted for Trump remind me of the Germans in the 1930's.

Hitler got out of prison - yes he was a criminal just like Trump - and his resolution was to convince Germans to vote for him. He used the exact same type of brainwashing and propagandizing we have seen with Trump. Hitler turned an entire country into mass murderers and slaughtered over six million humans, not to mention the number who died on the battlefields attempting to stop his madness.

Now that we are in 2025, I find it harder and harder to not be glum and disconsolate about Trump and the January 20th inauguration. I don't have the solutions nor do I know how to convince Trump-followers that he is a criminal and a con man. I can only hope that someone will find the key to solve this impasse before Trump imprisons innoncent people, or he invades other countries, or the death-toll begins to rise.

I lived in Russia when it was a communist nation, when Yeltsin took power and Russians felt a sense of freedom, and when Putin assumed power. Putin has been compared to Stalin - a ruthless dictator who killed over 20 million people. He is said to appreciate this assessment.

So here we are - the year 2025 - it might as well be Orwell's 1984 - where the Ministry of Truth slogans included: War is Peace, Freedom is Slavery, and Ignorance is Strength.

It is indescribably sad how far our ethics and principles have fallen and how readily that is accepted. :(

It’s difficult to believe these two men are even the same species they are so different. What a sad statement about America that we’ve become a country so filled with ignorance, hate, and division that we’ve elected something as horrific as Trump not only once, but TWICE! Knowing he will be the leader of my country makes me physically ill.

Excellent, but depressing, essay. It's been shown that ethics is top-down in organizations. Carter's ethics influenced everyone in his administration. Trump's lack of ethics has, and will again, influence everyone in his administration. When the boss is unethical, others follow suit.

This plays a huge part in why people think elections don't matter any more, and why they've lost their faith in institutions.

While all this is absolutely true, it is defeated by Trump’s and MAGA’s intransigence—they just don’t care. They have stopped listening. The worst, dumbest, most corrupt president in U.S. history has become practically a deity, who brooketh no dissent. How did these perfect Christians become heathens?
