The irony is that Robert's has always been so concerned about his court's legacy. Yet he's to damn dense to realize that his court's legacy will be that it's rulings paved the way for the destruction of the Constitution & American Democracy. He is one of the weakest Chief Justices in SCOTUS history & has allowed men like trump & McConnell to completely undermine the Constitution & democracy.

"..[T]he cost of the Supreme Court continuing to do Trump’s bidding may be to undermine the judicial power and authority that Republicans devoted so much effort to obtain."

Definitely a possibility! But what are the odds of Roberts and his political hacks actually standing up to Trump? Back when I was teaching American government to community college students, I would have told them that SCOTUS was a reliable bulwark against blatant abuses of power. Now I'm not so sure...

This clear and concise explanation of how the court is so critically compromised and the ramifications of their next actions makes me extremely afraid as well as angry. The individuals whose actions have led to this situation have much for which they need to be held accountable- hopefully they will at least pay the price at their next election.

Not only is the Supreme court supporting Trump to be king, but they are supporting his behavior of destroying his monarchy. By doing that they lose power and he loses power and the US loses power. We are a big country, but our GDP can shrink a lot with his actions. Maybe it won't. If it does, because that would be his best way of getting back at Biden is destroying everything Biden built up, in his Kakostocratic way, then we are screwed.

The US is already starting to be less relevant. With Trump at the helm it might be for the best. Let the EU stand up to Putin, and I guess no one will stand up to Xi, so all roads lead to him dominating and perhaps expanding.

In the meantime, Americans will starve, be imprisoned and it is unfair. If you came from another country to study, I recommend you go elsewhere. Here is an article I wrote recommending just that.

The piece concludes, “How can the rightwing justices who control the Supreme Court expect a future president — particularly a Democratic one — to accept rulings limiting the exercise of their power from a Court that served as the judicial stooge of an aspiring dictator?”

I wish I had confidence that the Court even contemplates the possibility of future presidents who are non-dictatorial and/or non-Republican. The wannabe dictator they’ve helped install clearly doesn’t: he just clarified (for the benefit of anyone lacking a brain) that his frequent and longstanding “joke” about serving a third term is actually in deadly earnest.

If the Court actually did intend its autocracy-enabling rulings to coexist with the traditional form of American democracy, they miscalculated grievously. Now we all get to reap what they’ve sown.

I fear with this SCOTUS at the helm we are doomed. Trump, and his sycophants will continue to dismantle our democratic republic dept by dept, law by law, and replace it with their desired authoritarian fascist government. Robert's is too weak to stand against Trump, his sycophants in DOJ, etc..., and Thomas, Alito, Gorsuch, Kavanaugh, and possibly Barret.

These people no longer believe in democracy. I believe they want authoritarian rule. It is sad and scary.

Yes it is scary but don't write off the courts so easily-

They are supposed to be the most brilliant jurists in the land. And yet they thought they could cede ever more power to the executive, establish their long sought autocracy and somehow still retain power. Like the leopards would never come for them.

I thought the headline referred to Citizens United and Musk giving away $2M to two trumpers in Wisconsin. Everyone knows that what Musk did was wrong, but John Roberts legal. And Musk IS a monster.

Roberts also capitulated to Trump by considering his “emergency” motions when no such emergencies actually exist.

SCOTUS gave up whatever ephemeral legitimacy they had when they ceded all power to djt. Respect for SCOTUS existed because they were seen to be interpreting the Constitution in an even-handed and sane manner - not acting like they couldn’t read let alone read the Constitution. djt will indulge them as long as they play his game. When they buck him, he will steamroll them. And SCOTUS, like mitch and company, will very richly deserve whatever happens to them. We cannot denigrate johnny roberts and his conservative colleagues enough - just as we cannot denigrate mitch and company enough.

Has anyone heard of Leonard Leo? He is or was a kingmaker who personally helped to stack the Supreme Court by wielding his extreme power and influence under the auspices of the Federalist Society. His pre-election gambit was to infiltrate Hollywood in order to saturate popular films and TV shows to promote rightwing ideology.

However, I can't imagine that he's fully behind Trump's lawless rampage. Trump is now beyond control, a Frankenstein's monster who can no longer be heeled. I think Leo's influence is waning in the face of higher profile billionaires like Musk who have no particular agenda beyond f'ing things up because he can and because he literally thinks we're all NPCs and that he is player one. He's a bored, edgy toddler, much like Trump, except that T is an old, doddering toddler.

At any rate, ideologues like Leo are still extremely dangerous and have understood their assignments. This nefarious plot to destroy democracy and remake our country entirely has been plotted and implemented over decades.

Curtis Yarvin is also one to watch, as he has greatly influenced Peter Thiel, whose special project is JD Vance. Fortunately for us, Vance is truly a bumbling sidekick with no idea what to do with his newfound powers.

What do the members of the Supreme Court get out of allowing trump to run rampant over the Constitution?

The involvement of John Roberts and other SCOTUS conservatives is extensive. I suggest reading Thom Hartman's The Hidden History of the Supreme Court. He also has another insightful book, The Hidden History of American Oligarchy.

“Roberts prepares a throne” — and, apparently, a career as Richelieu to Trump’s Louis XII, as the latter’s “immunity” requires the former’s approval. Which makes Roberts the passive-aggressive “king” here.

Yup … the Supremacy Court has hoisted itself on its own petard… This is coupled with highly questionable if not entirely corrupt actions by “Injustices” Thomas and Alito. Perhaps Roberts with Barrett can forestall Trumpian Dictatorship by aligning with Kagan, Jackson and Sotomayor. One can hope….
