Excellent commentary, as usual. It is hard to believe that we are hanging on to the rule of law by such a gossamer thread. Merchan is David against the hideous Goliath that is Trump. After the avalanche of lies, invective, corruption, and treason on public view for all these years, we are holding on to hope for a (paltry) sentencing in the only case that could produce a conviction. Although he has never been acquitted of any crime nor won one of his ridiculous nuisance lawsuits, Trump manages to intimidate his way into never being held accountable. And now we have the worst to come. I suspect that if he dropped dead from a stroke or heart attack in full public view, his minions would find some way to blame it on “the radical Left.”
I am with you Debbie. More than Trumps last reign of terror this time feels like he can do as he pleases without any push back. I hope there are at least a few Democrats willing to take a stand!
I appreciate that the Dems "accepted" the election results and carried out the certification procedure in accordance with the Constitution. I like that they're 'honoring' the will of the American people (although I believe voting was tampered with - not just Russian interference but voter suppression in southern states). Dems have demonstrated class and how patriotic leaders should act. I just hope like hell they're working their asses off behind the scenes to thwart the idiotic plans the orange lunatic and his sick minions will try to enact. Good lord, this is scary stuff.
We (Dems, Dem supporters, Never Trumpers from all over the country) need to step up and help to the best of our abilities to get the word out these next four years. Whether joining our local Democratic Cmte, writing Letters to the Editor, hosting/attending political house parties, writing postcards, holding signs, calling friends, neighbors, and relatives, contacting our representatives, etc., there is something for everyone to do.
These are examples of some of the ways that all of us can "work our asses off behind the scenes." I believe it is incumbent on every one of us to do what we can to deflate support for Drumpf and his fascist/oligarchic regime....while we still can change hearts and minds.... 💙🌊
"counsel has resorted to language..." Just amazing seeing the misconduct and complete disrespect for the rule of law taking shape on every front. This is going to be a very messy period. Great read from the Public Notice team. Let's get this sentencing over with.
Liz Dye, well done. A very interesting perspective with a lot of cogent thought. This week will end up being a long-sought conviction. That is my hope. Judge Merchan has disarmed the crook. Judge Cannon cannot rescue Trump in this venue. We get to see a sexual predator felon be branded for life. https://hotbuttons.substack.com/p/predator-felon-despot?r=3m1bs
So many things are deteriorating it is difficult to keep track. But there are things we can do. Here is a BIG ONE:
BLUE ALERT! 38 states have ratified the ERA. All Biden has to do is order the national archivist to publish it and the ERA is our 28th amendment! The ERA can protect women when T rolls back Title VII and Title IX.
Trump will not govern for all the people. He will not govern in fact; he is all retribution, vengeance, against the system while using the system to show off the power we the people are laying on him out of obeisance to the rule of law. The insurrection will continue via his lieutenants, ill intentioned loyalists that the Senate is about to approve. It’s all legit. It’s amazing how we all go off the cliff because one side obeys the rule of law and the other side evades and trashes it.
This is excellent: "with great power comes no responsibility." Since Ford pardoned Nixon for his crimes against the Nation, there has been no accountability for presidential crimes. Reagan was a criminal, and so is this demented weirdo. The SCOTUS Trump Protection Squad assures him that he can do anything he feels like doing.
I hope Judge Merchan whacks Trump for millions in fines, and I hope the prosecutors in NYC move for Rule 11 sanctions against Blanche and Bove for their disgusting pleadings. Huge fines and barring them from further appearances in NY courts seem appropriate. Nothing short of massive punishment will stop this abuse.
An interesting subject to be explored is the theories of Blanche and Bove … they show no legal background, are poorly written and, at heart, frivolous. Like Trump himself. Why do the courts accept this stuff? (And some certainly do not—Judge Merchan for one.) An official title is no grounds for self-important bloviating.
At last, we blather on about “the adults in the room” and yet, where are the adults in the country. John Roberts, as illustrated above, is craven. Trump is the very definition of craven. This used to be a nation of brave men and women, now we hide in the shadows and bemoan our fates. Stand up, puncture the bloat—it was done in the Sixties, and we were a better nation for it.
Judge Merchan and all the other judges and juries have passed convictions on Trump based on the cases made and facts presented deserve the Presidential Medal of Freedom given how they have executed their duties to uphold the law and constitution in the face of the harm they have faced!
As it’s been pointed out, Merchan is not not imposing actual punishment for Trump, it is Bragg. The judge is respecting what Bragg has asked for in terms of sentencing.
Trump’s petition to the SCOTUS, on this matter, also claims he has complete immunity while president and that’s not correct.
He also scares me stating, in essence, that two people can have immunity at the same time while making statements about never having to vote again. The immunity ruling, its interpretation of the Founders, and actually using Hamilton’s Fed 70 and the civil case in Nixon, abundantly, are abhorrent.
Trump’s petition to the SCOTUS for the reversal of the CO Supreme Court decision on the 14th is ridiculous. His attorney argues a promise of chaos and bedlam if Trump were to be removed. So, his defense for reversal of removal/disqualification for insurrection is there will be an insurrection if removed. Got it.
He also doesn’t have a mandate.
Where is Biden? I’m a huge fan but this country is heading for disaster, in blimp like fashion, if he repeats the mistakes of P. von Hindenburg.

WILL NO ONE STOP THIS FASCIST LUNATIC????? I hope to God that at the very least our military will refuse to invade Greenland and Mexico and Canada.

Merchan just seems to stand above the rest in intelligence, courage and class.

Why is it that the Party of supposed masculinity (Republicans) allow and support a man who constantly whines about his predicaments.
Excellent piece. At last a great writer with insight. Thank you

Is there any doubt that the insurrection continues--- soon coming to our highest office.
