As an American, I can only say: Democracy is the theory that the common people know what they want, and deserve to get it good and hard.

Americans who sat out this past election, or wrote-in "protest votes" because they didn't like Trump but refused to vote for Harris (the only legitimate opposition to Trump in our electoral system) aren't any better than Trump voters, and they deserve what they're going to get.

What I fear is that our (former) allies *won't* truly stand up to Musk/Trump and seek to negotiate. We already have an opposition party that, reportedly, may give up its *only* effective means to oppose Musk/Trump (the filibuster on the CR.) To have any hope of regaining our government eventually, we need foreign leaders to stand up to Musk/Trump and make voters feel the full consequences of their vote.

As an older American, I applaud my Canadian neighbors for standing up to the bully and will continue to buy Canadian products as long as I am able. As a Michigander, Canada really IS our neighbor, and I am appalled at the behavior of our government toward them. I knew this was possible, I did NOT vote for this mess, and I bitterly resent being tarred with the same brush as the idiots who did. Unfortunately, my resentment amounts to very little in the eyes of the MAGAts - the fools around here are so very proud of their beloved Donnie and still so willing to believe that Biden was the root of all their economic woes. Some days, I don't even want to get out of bed.

Keep gettin' outa bed, amiga. I'm an older Washingtonian and equally appalled and losing sleep over this horrific crap. We are living in a country swallowed by a hideous cult (think Jim Jones, Sun Myung Moon, Warren Jeffs) of magats who cannot and will not see any truth. Stay informed AND connected with us through Public Notice, HCR, Timothy Snyder, Harry Litman and more. And go enjoy anti tesla/Swastikar rallies if any are near you. They're uplifting.

Thanks so much for the encouraging words, chica! Us older gals sometimes need a little boost, eh? I consume as much info as I can handle on the daily, then disconnect for some quiet time by reading and knitting. I've got subs to a ton of premium indie journos (think Acosta, Legum, Musk Watch, Joyce White Vance, etc.), and an account on Bluesky so I think I'm pretty informed. If I wasn't working full-time, I'd be right there at the Swastikar rallies!! As it is, I donate to our politicians and many other democratic organizations, trying to improve the odds of the better ones being elected!

It’s becoming more and more important that we understand the source of the incoherence. Remember when djt was demanding Kamala Harris take a cognitive test?

We must stop the CR as it gives the President new powers to steal legally and to tax citizens in a way that puts the funds under Executive branch unilateral control. Give the purse to a felon? We must stop the CR. It gives the President new powers. https://hotbuttons.substack.com/p/fraud?r=3m1bs

I do not believe that conservatives are being honest with themselves or with us. Lowering taxes for wealthy people and decimation of government are two of their goals. They laud free markets as the great savior of civilization. You cannot have it both ways.

This is all taking on the logic of a twisted murder-suicide pact: Trump and Putin murder everyone for their perverse pleasure, then commit suicide because there’s no one left to rule over.

Pretty sure that it's the only thing he's ever done right - in a perverse sort of way. Go World! I say this knowing it will hurt us but that will happen either way under the trump/musk regime. Hurt for the time it takes to stop it or hurt under it for the duration. Pretty clear choice.

By quoting directly from Trump without being clear that what Trump said is a lie, you are spreading his misinformation. If you don’t know the context or facts what he says can be seen as reasonable. My guess is with your direct quotes from him you are trying to point out how little he knows or how awful he is. But unless you say this in your posts on Bluesky, for example, you are just amplifying his points. You seem to assume people know what he said was wrong so you are speaking to a narrow audience and not helping others see how bad he is.

This is an example of this. It sounds very reasonable to say that if people don’t pay for something, you don’t owe them anything.

“REPORTER: Are you gonna make it US policy that the US wouldn't defend NATO countries that don't pay their fair share?

TRUMP: Well, I think it's common sense. If they don't pay I'm not gonna defend them. No, I'm not gonna defend them.”
