If this Supreme Court backs Tump on denying children born in the USA of citizenship, then we'll know for sure that all their talk about taking a literal and originalist approach to what is actually in the constitution was a facade.
So will they investigate everyone no matter what country their parents were from?
I have some Ukrainian family members, they married a cousin, she was not born here
and her parents were not, but her sisters were. Did her parents wait until they were citizens
before they had her sisters? Is anyone going to look into them because they are white? Or are they letting them pass?
I live near many Eastern Europeans and people from south of our border. I know Hispanic people are worried even those with the right documentation. The Europeans better be afraid too, if they think their whiteness will cover them, I think they will be mistaken.
Public Notice is one of several sources of truthful news and analysis I subscribe to. It is good to know the truth. I wonder, however, how much it matters when supporters of Trump would never read these articles, let alone understand the content. The old expression, "singing to the choir," comes to mind. Maybe I'm just exhausted, especially when reminded thst in the end our country's future is in the hands of a Supreme Court, whose majority members' agenda is aligned with Trump and Project 2025.
While I do see that a chunk of the country is part of a magat cult that is blind to all but the words of the grandmagat, TRUTH has to be told every single day, and we all need to read it and listen to it. Heather Cox Richardson, Harry Litman and the reporters on Public Notice are doing exactly this. Their reporting is not a shrieking deluge of opinion, but instead well researched journalism that can be easily fact checked. We desperately need this to continue, if we're not to sink into the morass of dumbassedness that plagues the magatfolk.
Standing together on this side of the vote will help us each to do our part of not obeying in advance; I hope non of the AG’s left their posts with the unlawful edict
Trump could sign an EO overturning the Emancipation Proclamation and 30% of the electorate would agree that freeing the slaves was government overreach.
This EO is just a test case for Trump. If the Supreme Court lets him get away with it, I think we can be reasonably certain that he will do it again and again and again until he has reshaped our Constitution to meet his own personal desire.
From across the pond: How can the Supreme Court legalise the Executive “order” to end birthright citizenship when this right is clearly stated in the Constitution. Can Supreme Court really decide against the Constitution? If this is the case The Constitution is not worth the paper it is written on. Or can Supreme Court decide to send the issue back to Congress “ordering” Congress to consider changing the Constitution? I am aware that this is a complicated process.
I agree that the USA has birthright citizenship until otherwise. But as Edith mentioned, does any of this matter if Republicans don’t GAF at this point?
Personally, I believe we are now at best in an illiberal democracy that has a slim chance of becoming a liberal (classical) one again or at worst, a constitutional presidential republic under a dictatorship. It will be so much harder for the US to get back to a liberal democracy. In the past, that wasn’t an issue. But now, whether a classical liberal democracy works is now between party lines.
A walking horror. If Felon 47 had had a great grandfather that was allowed to return to Germany we would have avoided this "The family went back to Germany in 1904. The town welcomed them with open arms, but high-ranking government officials did not. They ordered Trump to be deported because he avoided serving in the military when he was a teenager."
If all it takes is an EO to undo Constitutional amendments, then the Rule of Law becomes moot. We are then an authoritarian country subject to the whims of whoever is living in the White House at the time.

We already knew that.

Thank you very much for the kind words, Hope!

I won't be shocked if/when trump issues a proclamation reinstating slavery. We are dealing with a mad man.

Hey, let’s get rid of the 14th Amendment entirely—property can protest, nor can you rape what you own (Ivana, do you hear?).
Your writing and contributor’s writing is so on point; I am trying to spread the word but can’t wait till I see your numbers soar
Sadly, the right chooses not to read anything but the cult manual.
SCOTUS reads the constitution in every way except left to right.
But first, Sam Alito calls Trump to say Hi.

I will not. I will not let them. I will not let them hold me. I will not let them hold me down. I will try to organize a resistance and develop the tactics needed. https://hotbuttons.substack.com/p/i-will-call-the-dnc-today?r=3m1bs
As goes Texas, goes America. Frightening. Racism! Misogyny! Bounty hunters! In Texas the South has risen again! Whoopie!

No, of course they won't. Republicans have never let the constitution or the law get in the way.
I think it is time that we need to remove these sentences from our vocabulary when it comes to Trump.
1. He broke the law
2. Constitutional crisis
3. Attack on the rule of law
I know there are others that are constantly being used. But he is doing all of the above
and nothing will be done.
Not only not done, but lustily applauded.
