Commemorating D-Day and having that Fascist Insurrectionist would-be dictator show up to peddle his garbage to Christian Nationalists here in Phoenix on the same day was an irony only the Mango Mussolini could produce.
I've got army veteran neighbors flying their American flags upside down in my neighborhood, next to their Trump and Christian flags.
Being veterans, some of them might care to know that what they currently are doing goes against what they did for our nation. You can tell them this came from another old soldier. Every servicemember (like every judge) swears to "support and defend" our Constitution (not any politician or party). Such support includes respecting federal law.
As even many children know, “the Flag of the United States of America” stands for our “Republic” and “liberty and justice for all.” 4 U.S.C. § 4. “No disrespect should be shown to the flag of the United States of America.” 4 U.S.C. § 8. In particular, “[t]he flag should never be displayed with the union down, except as a signal of dire distress in instances of extreme danger to life or property.” 4 U.S.C. § 8(a).
Being a trumpette turns a switch off to the logic, reason, and empathy sectors of the brain. They undoubtedly know that, and most assuredly do not give a single fuck. Just like the ChristoFascist brethren on the "Supreme Court".
Very much unlike Justice Alito, those veterans almost certainly haven't ever thought (and exceedingly likely never knew) about such provisions of federal law. Except for the Pledge of Allegiance, I never knew about those laws (the whole time I was a soldier and for decades thereafter as a lawyer). I didn't know the Pledge was in federal law. Anyone flying a US flag upside-down for Trump at this point is so far gone that very likely nothing will get through. Still, it doesn't hurt to have something intelligent and insightful to say in response to such disrespect for our flag and "the Republic for which it stands." It doesn't hurt to have a way to show them that their "patriotism" isn't patriotic.
Don't give them credit where it isn't due. They know the code. I flew my flag upside down for several months last year, right up until Biden's SOTU, this year, which renewed my hope in the flag. I know what it means, and they most certainly do also.
I haven't personally met anyone who has flown the US flag outside their home upside-down. Justice Alito and you are the only two that I've encountered who knew that doing so violated federal law. So I'd sincerely like to know the answer to two questions that I'd like to see Congress ask Justice Alito.
What was it that made such a person decide that flying a US flag upside-down should be a personal political statement? How does a person who knows and respects our flag, knows and respects what it stands for (our Republic and liberty and justice for all), and knows that flying it upside down violates federal law come to the conclusion that the US flag should be flown upside down just to make a personal political statement?
For you, my first question is, in part, related to your initial post: living in the neighborhood you described in your initial post, why would you fly the US flag upside down?
The lawlessness of the GOP, in its entirety, is terrifying.
We are under attack from within.
We are a nation in distress.
I was just at the grocery store and one guy had a trump 24 hat, one had a , "I'm votng for the convicted felon" tshirt, and two others were wearing don't tread on me t shirts.
We are in distress. That is not a political statement, that is a fact.
Secondarily, fuck that flag and any nationalistic bullshit attempt to tell me I can't fly it upside down, wipe my ass with it, or set it on fire.
Republicans have always valued style over substance. They craft this illusion of common good that is anything but.
Republicans fully understand that intellectually ignorant citizens are central to their plan. They count on Evangelicals and extreme right wing Catholics to tout that this is a holy war that is anything but.
They have crippled journalism.
We need so many more journalists like you, Aaron. Thank you for your efforts! I would go out of my mind without it.☺️
Yeoman’s work, and I salute you for it. It’s both surprising and not that the corrosive blast was there from day one and it never let up. Like I knew that but also. Receipts are so much easier to come by in this day and age.
In the flood of current Convicted Felon misinformation, it's good to be reminded of the consistency of the raving mad, always unhinged, forever aggrieved narcissist and cult leader. Compare this to the steady hand of our elder statesman POTUS, who represents the best of America.
I don't see how (without lying and knowingly violating our Constitution) Justice Alito and his his gang could "give" Trump (or any president) immunity for anything that Trump did. What Trump did was foreseen by the very people who wrote the Constitution (and it was written about by a lot of people). They did not write our Constitution to allow any immunity for anyone merely because they're "too big to fail." See, e.g., "A Plea for Freedom of Speech in America" https://blackcollarcrime.substack.com/p/a-plea-for-free-speech-in-america?r=30ufvh
Aaron, you were great on the Daily Blast. And for anyone who's not listening to it yet, it's really good. Interesting guests (and not the ones that make the rounds on all the other political podcasts), topics of immediate import, and it's 30 minutes or less long so not a huge time commitment like some are.
Trump is so thoroughly dishonest and disgusting and defies reality with every word he says. This well-written piece carefully details his unhinged behavior. Sadly his words resonate with his followers who are too selfish and self-absorbed they wouldn’t know the truth if it was staring into their collective faces. More so, they vote and unless our side recruits new voters who understand what’s at stake his efforts to lie himself into the presidency again will happen.

The cognitive dissonance is unreal.
