These people think it’s our duty to die for pregnancy. It’s our job. We’re supposed to be martyrs for maternity & be happy about it.

Not martyrs.

"Overall, the Texas maternal mortality rates rose at nearly five times the rate nationwide in those three years. And make no mistake — our nationwide maternal mortality rate is already the highest in the world among high-income countries."

This part of this excellent piece is haunting. Hubris can be self-destructive and American quality of life is falling to levels that should make us question our definition of "developed." It is sad that we have let narrow-minded, anti-intellectual movements dictate our policy and political culture for so long. The impact is felt in all of the needless maternal deaths.

Why aren't ( ethical) doctors loud about this or disobeying these laws? Didn't they take the Hippocratic Oath?

« - I am your protector,” he said. “You will no longer be abandoned, lonely, or scared. You will no longer be in danger » Doesn’t that sound like Jim Jones before he ordered everyone to take the poison/ be poisoned?

Actually, it sounds like the spiel every pimp uses to groom future assets.

The Republican Party does not believe it's the job of government to help people, unless those people are wealthy. It believes the job of government is to help businesses, especially corporations. It's not job of government to regulate businesses (i.e., Boar's Head, Boeing, etc.), it's not the job of government to enforce tax laws on the wealthy and corporations (defund the IRS), but it's the job of government to regulate and enforce laws on women. Not only do Red states refuse to provide any financial help for families they also never say anything about the men involved in unwanted pregnancies. They don't improve reporting and prosecution of men who rape and commit incest. It's always about controlling and punishing women by not providing adequate health care and threatening doctors and hospitals to make certain they don't help either. Vote Blue, up and down the ballot. All Republicans are complicit in harming women.

Patricia, a great summary of the flagrant hypocrisy of MAGA concerning reproductive rights that they’re willing to take away. So much for keeping government out of people’s lives.

Although I live in Australia I follow American politics closely and am surprised I haven't heard Democrats making more hay over abortion in the campaign. Yes it gets mnetioned but given how clear a winner it is for them I'd have expected a heavier emphasis on it. Or is it just that I don't get to hear American political advertisements?

There are many ads condemning tfg for the overturning of Roe v Wade, but they only play in swing states. I live in a blue state, but I’m in the news market of a swing state, so I get all of the ads.

In post-Roe America it has become evident that when a woman gets pregnant her life is forfeit. Under a 2nd Trump administration I believe insurance companies would be able to argue that a pregnant woman can be denied healthcare because their life is not relevant.

Making calls to voters, my first call yesterday turned out to be a MAGA woman, mid 40s. I was stunned, and broke script and said, "I'm sorry you don't value your rights." She responded, "Sorry you have skewed views," and hung up. MAGA cult. And then she called me back at 10 (I didn't recognize the number then and didn't take the call. I don't take ANY calls at 10 pm.). Weird.

I mean honestly, if this guy is elected, it is the clearest sign possible of The End Times.

The choice of Who Do You Want To Be could not be made in plainer terms.

Ah yes, Donald Trump, Hands On Protector of Women! And he has a concept of a plan: Speak loud, look elsewhere.

"The other is to clearly define which conditions constitute a life-threatening emergency and provide explicit protections for doctors who perform abortions to address those conditions."

I understand what you are saying here, but the proposal still keeps medical decisions in the hands of the government, instead of with the doctors and patients, where it should be.

"Clean up on aisle seven!" Trump is famous for making sweeping nonsense promises and then running from them. Owning this one is driving voters to Harris. I honestly don't think he's invested in a campaign. He's just butting into things where he doesn't belong to stir up some stuff in a frying pan.But it's all screwing with real people and their lives. He's a sociopath, he doesn't care.

Just think of how the economy would react to the mass deportations he rants and raves about. Losing all those consumers would kill commerce to say nothing about losing the workers who harvest our food.

Weirder? Thats going easy on him….. it’s downright sadistic and sick. I seriously don’t know how any women could vote for him. He and his cohorts literally want you barefoot and pregnant from 15-45…. With absolutely ZERO outside help if you should need it. Forget any thoughts of a career or dreams. They want all women to be literal baby factories and subservient to men in every single way…. Think 1930-1960.
